“Sunday Night Football on NBC…Al and Chris are the best on TV.” Yes, they are.
Al Michaels’ career is well documented and his long-time role as play-by-play announcer opposite John Madden demonstrated his solid announcing skills. The unknown, of course, was whether Chris Collinsworth could step in when Madden retired.
The Baltimore Sun’s David Zurawik noted Collinsworth’s ability to explain “the games within the games like nobody else on TV can.” There are many in broadcasting who are quite good at it, but Zurawik is correct in referring to Collinsworth as a standout.
In an era where mediocre broadcasters (especially in MLB) seem to go on forever out of personal popularity and tenure, rather than talent, here’s hoping NBC keeps Al and Chris in the booth for a long time. The game happens on the field, but the insight and analysis Chris Collinsworth delivers makes it all the more enjoyable.
